Mashiro: A professional manga artist makes his living purely through drawing manga his whole life. Even if you succeed in publishing a series for a weekly magazine, your manga is ranked according to the reader questionnaires. If it isn’t popular enough, it gets cut in ten weeks.

Takagi: (How come he knows so much about it?)

Mashiro: You’re a manga artist /if you create one mega hit or several ones successful enough to live off of. Otherwise, you’re just a gambler. Even the author of death note wrote somewhere /that he’d probably starve to death in five years/ if he didn’t keep working..

Takagi: Hmm. That’s a surprise. But then again, Death note was a pretty short series.

Mashiro: Probably only 0.1 percent of the population can truly become successful manga artists. Actually, 0.1 would mean one in a thousand, so it’s more like 0.001 percent. About one in a hundred thousand people. If you and I team up, /our individual probability’s down to 0.0005 percent/ since it’s half the revenue.

Takagi: You’re chatty all of a sudden. And what’s with all the stats? Did you get that info from someone?

Mashiro: (Well, it’s not like he’ll go around telling everybody.) My uncle was a manga artist. I mean, a gambler. (That’s right. was.)
